COURSE OUTLINE

Learning Outcomes:

We hope that at the end of this course, you the participant will understand basic electrical concepts and electrical system installation and also learn how to install solar panels, Inverters, batteries and the complete system. You will also learn the trouble shooting, repair and diagnosis of the Solar charge controller, Inverter, solar panels and deep cycle batteries. We want to launch you into a powerful career in renewable energy and because of that, we are giving out additional during the training and we shall take you through the principles of solar technology with great EMPHASIS on the practical/hands-on training on how to install a complete solar system. We shall also teach you the BUSINESS side of this amazing technology.

Target audience:

This course is aimed at college Students, graduates, NYSC members, Engineers, Home owners, Architects, Property Developers, Consultants, anyone that has interest in Renewable energy or who want, to have a good understanding of Solar Photovoltaic.

Prerequisites:

A basic knowledge of O’Level Physics, electricity or experience of renewable energy is an advantage.

A basic knowledge of electrical engineering will be an advantage, but it is not compulsory for the participation to the course.

TRAINING DAY 3

  • Different tools & tackles used for specific purpose in an installation and maintenance of Solar PV and electrical system
  • Identify Tools & Tackles used for civil/mechanical installation
  • Understand the Typical faults, their causes and resolution for all components
  • continuity checks, polarity check, Voltage, Current, DC and AC Power. Measurement of
  • Electrical Quantities and other O&M activities

  • Understand the DO’s and Don’ts of material handling;
  • Potential risk in solar PV plant and its individual component

BASIC POWER ELECTRONICS AND SEMICONDUCTOR DEVICES

  • Passive and active components in UPS, and stabilizers
  • Testing of components with a digital multi –meter in Inverters
  • Identification of components in circuit diagram and replacements
  • Use of soldering Iron and Temperature Regulators
  • MOSFETs and its applications
  • Capacitors and its applications

Practical Exercise: physical identification of components and their numbers/ratings

Resistors and Colour Codes

  • Resistor and capacitor rating and tolerance

Basic Semiconductor Devices

  • MOSFETs

  • Application of semiconductor devices

Practical Exercise: live trouble shooting/ repair of various faults in 4KVA inverter, components replace in various capacity inverters

TRAINING DAY 03

INTRODUCTIONS TO ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT DESIGN

  • Introduction to SMPS (switch mode power supply)
  • Analysis and design of simple rectifiers’ circuit
  • Simple 500w inverter design

Practical Exercise: design of a simple rectifier and voltage regulators

Types of Solar Energy Installations.

  • How to make Series and Parallel Installations of Batteries and Panels.
  • Connecting Charge Controllers Cascading Solar Panels in Series & Parallel, Cascading Batteries.

TRAINING DAY 2

INVERTER INSTALLATION

  • How to carry out a comprehensive site survey for potential solar installation
  • Electrical Load Isolation from the Mains Circuit Breaker (MCB),
  • interfacing the Inverter to the Building,
  • Connecting the Solar Panels to the Inverter.
  • Interfacing the Solar Charge Controller to the Inverter, mounting and Installation of solar panels

TRAINING DAY3

  • Energy Efficiency, Energy Auditing, Introduction to Systems Design: Designs and Installation procedures of inverter systems
  • Understanding Inverter Specifications & Features, estimating Inverter capacity for specific household or Load requirements,
  • Basic Inverter standalone tests.
  • Solar Panel specifications, Estimating Solar and Inverter specifications for a given loads or Power requirements

TRAINING DAY4

  • Solar Electrical Installation & Electrical Safety: Safety in handling deep cycle batteries (to avoid for e.g. Explosion or fire!). This module of the training teaches all the Electrical safety requirements, for Inverter Installation.

Practical Exercise: Live installation of An Inverter system plus deep cycle batteries

Protective Devices in Electronic Circuits

  • how to select the best protective device for your load requirements

Practical Exercise: Practical demonstration on installation of various protective devices
